Sheri Burns Medi-Cal Managed Care: Mandatory Enrollment Required for Medi-Cal Only Recipients If you are a person with a disability or senior, live in Alameda County, and receive Medi- Cal as your only healthcare coverage, then you will be required to enroll in one of the approved Medi-Cal Managed Care Plans within 30 days of your birth month. This program is part of the State’s efforts to improve care coordination and implement health care reform. If you have Medicare or any other health insurance besides Medi-Cal, or you have a share of cost with Medi-Cal, or if you are in long term care (ICF or NF), you are exempt from the Medi-Cal managed care program. If you receive Medi-Cal only and are not currently enrolled in managed care, you will receive a letter about 90 days prior to your birthday from the California Department of Health Care Services, and an enrollment packet soon thereafter. A phone call reminder will also go out about 30 days prior to your enrollment deadline. In Alameda County you will have two managed care plan options: . Alameda Alliance for Health: www.alamedaalliance.org OR . Anthem Blue Cross: www.anthem.com/ca There are a few exceptions: . If you are already in Kaiser’s Medi-Cal Health Plan or have an immediate family member who is, you may be able to remain with Kaiser, but must request approval from Kaiser first, then enroll through Alameda Alliance for Health. Spaces are limited. . You may keep your private provider doctor who is not in one of the approved Plans if you request and are approved for a waiver. Waivers are good for 12 months and are usually granted to those who are under specialized care or receiving specialized medical treatment. Physicians will be encouraged to join one of the two main Plans, however, to maintain continuity of care. You can also ask your healthcare provider to join the Plan you are interested in. For more information contact Health Care Options (HCO), at 1-800-430-4263 or TTY:1-800-430-7077 or at www.healthcareoptions.dhcs.ca.gov.
